自重輕是輕型鋼結構顯著的特點。輕型鋼結構的承重構件主要采用輕型焊接H型鋼、高頻焊接型鋼、輕型熱軋型鋼、冷彎薄壁型鋼等截面形式,這些型鋼截面比普通的工的情況下,輕型鋼結構比普通鋼結構節(jié)約鋼材30%以上。一般單層輕型鋼結構廠房用鋼量為20~40kg/m2,采用冷彎薄壁型鋼的輕鋼屋架用鋼量為15kg/m2以下,輕型鋼結構房屋的圍護結構采用輕質材料,圍護結構和主體承重結構自重均較輕,結構基礎形式簡單且費用低。

輕型鋼結構的鋼材具有材質均勻、強度高、彈塑性性能好,承受動載能力強,可靠性高,構件破壞前有較大的塑性變形。此外,輕型鋼結構自重輕,結構的地震作用顯著減小,結構整體抗震性能強。對于單層或低層輕型鋼結構,地震作用通常不起控制作用。比如單層門式剛架結構,一般情況下可以不做抗震驗算。

輕型鋼結構的建筑構造簡單,所用材料為常規(guī)材料,主要構件和配件均為工廠工業(yè)化制作,構件加工精度高。構件自重輕,運輸安裝便利,無須大型機械設備,工地現場安裝方便。除基礎施工外,基本沒有濕作業(yè),構件之間多采用螺栓連接,現場施工人員少,與同規(guī)模的鋼筋混凝土結構相比,輕型鋼結構施工工期可縮短1/3左右。
